I had a couple of events downtown on the same day during the summer. There didn’t seem to be much point in going home in between, so I popped into the Main Library to check out the Friends Shop. I hadn’t been there in a long time. And it turned out to be such a treat that I joined as a Member of Friends, thus ensuring a discount.
I seldom really shop – I just wake up with a notion in my head, and go wherever that notion directs me. This notion was just perfect. Everything in the shop is pretty unique, not what I’d seen around in other places. I especially loved the scarves, the baby stuff (lots of friends seem to be having babies these days), and the jigsaw puzzles. Plus some used mysteries for a buck.
I stopped in again when I was down there doing readings at Halloween, and made a good start on some Christmas shopping – yes, several more scarves. And I’m hoping they order another of an airy scarf someone else had just bought, that was perfect to wear for the holidays.
So next time you’re downtown with a minute to spare – check it out. Feels good, prices are very reasonable (not to say cheap), folk are friendly. Just the right kind of place. Aaaahhhh.
