War Thinking

March 4, 2012 By pgarry

Woke up this morning with the feeling of my hand on the firm and powerful belly of the mother carrying the baby.? So compact, so impregnable – a perfect container for new life.? And that new life belongs to itself – it does not belong to the mother or the fathers or the village.

As Kahlil Gibran says in The Prophet, it comes through us, it does not belong to us.? We are the allowers, the supporters, the cheerleaders, the protectors.? That is our job.? Life’s job is to maximize itself, express itself as uniquely as it can, being true to its own nature.

The next thought in my head was – this is why women oppose war.? War wastes life and all its unique expressions for things – material wealth, land, power, hollow self-satisfactions.

Because Iran and its war ayatollahs and president choose to look at the west and feel unequal, they want a phallus / bomb to wave in the faces of those whose attention they cannot get otherwise.

They could choose to express and grow the ancient Persian culture of which they say they are so proud – and which did indeed produce art and people uniquely beautiful and powerful.? That expression in joy and peace would no doubt get the attention and admiration of the rest of the planet.? We would replicate and begin to incorporate into our national life designs and themes from those times and that place.

But those who do not carry life – and who belittle and denigrate those who do – many times throughout history seem to worship death, killing and being willing to kill for the lowest and most unimportant of purposes – the glory of their leaders. And to put treasure in those pockets, which seldom trickled down to support the life of the peoples whose lives were trampled.

It is good right now to see North Korea turn its back on nuclear posturing to seek food for its people, who may now learn to shine with the tools the 21st century provides, rather than suffering the diminishment of energy and creativity that hunger carries.

Stepping back from the anger and hubris of a permanent state of war, turning toward life.? A hallmark of the paradigm shift.? May those dominoes continue to fall.
