Restaurant Review: Mahogany’s at the Banks!

February 22, 2013 By pgarry

I had heard a lot about Mahogany’s – Upscale Southern Cooking – which opened at The Banks a few months ago. This African-American restaurant was recruited by Cincinnati City Manager Milton Dahoney from Hamilton, Ohio, to add a different style of cooking to our roaring river neighborhood.

It was very early on Friday evening – just a few minutes after 5 – when my friend and I wandered in. The place is beautiful, open, elegant, rich looking in decor and color. Our server, Tyrone, was a treat – charming, upbeat, excellent energy and knew all about the menu – except for Scotch. He didn’t know much about the single-malt Scotches available and had to check with the bartender.

In the meantime, he put in our order for an appetizer of fried green tomatoes, which came out shortly after my friend’s Scotch arrived. I don’t know about the Scotch, but the tomatoes were so good that half way through my entree, I placed another order for them. I had decided to take my entree (vegetarian side dishes) home for sometime during the weekend, and realized I was still hungry for more – especially with the chipotle-ish dipping sauce.

My friend’s large order of ribs (also ordered with a view to taking them home) was literally falling off the bone.

We then had to look at the desserts – each one looking better than the other. But my ears had perked up when I heard mention of peach cobbler, so that was our choice. Terrific!

So a great choice – wonderful friendly service, well-made food, elegant atmosphere. Check it out! : >
