Author Review: Janet Evanovich

October 18, 2013 By pgarry

Wanting to turn my brain off for a while, and just read a mystery / adventure / light and fun, I wandered into the Walnut Hills library a couple of weeks ago, and found two recent Janet Evanovich novels – a Stephanie Plum (with Ranger): Notorious Nineteen, and Wicked Business, a new series with Lizzy and Diesel.

Nineteen just piles it on in typical Stephanie fashion – action after action after action, lots of heat (including Ranger and the cop she’s considering as a possible husband), explosions, her mom and grandmother and father, details like crazy (her co-workers at Cousin Vinnie’s bailbond business, street directions for her town, descriptions of the various weapons that blow up the various cars. It’s also absolutely hysterical.

Then there’s the new Wicked series, featuring the seriously supernatural Diesel, and Lizzy, who’s just coming to terms with her own super gift of sensing the power in inanimate objects (kind of psychometry, but supercharged). Again lots of sex, specific and implied, mysteries all over the place, a sexy and maybe evil villain, with a crazed henchman – and the Seven Deadly Sins as the series theme.

There is always a lot to laugh about in a Janet Evanovich book, of which there are now a great many. And I ended up doing something I hadn’t done in years – devoured each book in one sitting / one evening. I used to do that routinely. So I’m glad I took the break and revisited an old habit. Thanks, Janet!
