I Always Start with the Cleanest Room

January 11, 2015 By pgarry

I first started doing this way back when I first started to be responsible for keeping a space clean – when I first got married and moved to Cincinnati way back… in 1960.

I always start with the cleanest room first. So the rest of the house may look like a teenage girl lives here, one who flies in and out, grabbing a snack and changing clothes. But there is usually one room that has escaped having everything just thrown down wherever there is space – and that’s where I begin.

Today, as I was getting ready for clients, it was the bedroom. Since I had actually managed to hang up my clothes when I got home last night, I needed to simply make the bed, organize the bedside table, put away my jewelry, and pick out today’s work outfit – I was going to be doing Reiki sessions, and so chose something loose and comfy, as well as warm.

I feel better as soon as some part of the house is in order – sacred space is returning!

Then it was the kitchen – loading the dishwasher after rinsing glasses and dishes, filling the bird feeders and distributing the seed, clearing the counters to bring back that feeling of openness and space.

And then the living room, bringing it back to peace, and readying the massage table for clients. Christmas is still up in there – it will probably come down next weekend, over the holiday.

The solution to organizing my office is just to close the door. The other bedroom was in good shape already, and the bathroom had managed to stay good. The downstairs space has become a staging area for putting away Christmas, but I didn’t worry about that. Probably should have, since one of my clients needed to come in that way, rather than take the outside steps. But it was presentable and all was well.

The house was full of love and peace, I put on one of my favorite meditation CDs (Lemurian Dreams by Michael Fess), and had a wonderful day.
